In response to Scott Walker's recent Facebook post calling for a constitutional amendment to allow states to strip LGBT couples of their right to marry, College Democrats of Wisconsin Vice Chair Tyler Smith released the following statement.

"Last Friday, as LGBT Americans across the country celebrated the right to marry the person they love, Scott Walker doubled down on his opposition to marriage equality. In a post on his Facebook page, Scott Walker declared the landmark civil rights victory 'a grave mistake' and called for a constitutional amendment to allow states to strip LGBT couples of their right to marry. Public support for marriage equality continues to grow in Wisconsin and across the country. Today, a majority of young Democrats and Republicans side with their LGBT classmates, friends and family members in believing that love is love. After Friday's landmark Supreme Court decision, we had hoped Scott Walker would have simply moved on and accepted the constitutional rights of his LGBT constituents. Instead, he sided with the most extreme elements of his party and against LGBT Wisconsinites.

As young people, College Republicans represent the future of their party. Love should not be a partisan issue -- We call on their leadership to address Scott Walker's remarks and reveal their organization's stance on our governor's proposed constitutional amendment. Students deserve to know whether the Wisconsin Federation of College Republicans stands with Scott Walker or their LGBT classmates."
