Vince Lombardi, Democrat.

Heading into Super Bowl weekend, it's a point of pride for us that Vince Lombardi was a member of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. In fact, he held a close friendship with John F. Kennedy while Kennedy was in office.  This fact was unbeknownst to Richard Nixon, who had a background check performed on Lombardi to determine if he would be a viable Vice Presidential candidate. Nixon saw Lombardi’s voting record and realized what many already knew - Lombardi was a Democrat and wasn’t switching anytime soon.

As the Packers face the Steelers this weekend vying for their 13th NFL Championship, enjoy some quotes from Vince Lombardi that illustrate his Democratic ideals:

  • “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.”
  • “Individual commitment to a group effort -- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”
  • “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.”
  • “The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.”
  • “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.”
