Democratic Weekly Radio Address: "The Republican War on Women"

Rep. Christine Sinicki offered the Democratic Weekly Radio Address today. This week's topic is how Gov. Walker secretly signed four bills into law last week that threaten women’s health care services, roll back workplace equality and undermine medically accurate sex education.

A written transcript of the address is below:

"Last week, Gov. Walker opened up another front in the Republican war on women.

"That's when the governor – in secret and right before a holiday weekend – signed into law four bills that undermine women's health care services and turn back recent progress made for working women in Wisconsin.

"One bill repealed the highly effective Equal Pay Enforcement Act that I authored with Senator Hansen to help close Wisconsin's wage gap between men and women. In a state where two-thirds of all women are working women – and are keeping so many families in the middle class – repealing the equal pay law is unacceptable.

"Another bill repealed a law that ensured medically accurate sex education in schools. And the other two bills imposed more hurdles to a woman's right to choose.

"By signing these bills into law, the governor has made it clear that he believes women do not deserve equal pay for equal work, that women cannot be trusted to make their own health care decisions and that the state should be dictating the curriculum to local school districts.

"This extreme Republican agenda is rolling back important advances we have made on women's health care and workplace equality.

"And, they are a significant distraction from what should have been the focus of this legislative session – creating good-paying jobs for Wisconsin families.

"This all-out assault on working women and women's health is disgraceful and wrong. We should be working together to make sure our women are healthy and receiving equal treatment under the law – because strong women mean a stronger Wisconsin."
