Following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate following the adoption by the Romney-Ryan-Thompson Republican Party of restrictive language that would ban abortion nationwide, without exceptions for rape and incest.
"For years, people in Wisconsin have watched as Tommy Thompson and Paul Ryan advocated turning back the clock for women and the ability of women to make their own health care decisions. Now, after Todd Akin committed the crime of explaining his beliefs, they have tried to distance themselves from his political fortunes.
"But the Romney-Ryan-Thompson track record is exactly in line with the thinking behind the Republican Akin plank, from Ryan co-sponsoring 38 restrictive anti-abortion measures, to both Romney and Ryan vowing to defund Planned Parenthood, to Thompson actually authoring the 2000 Constitutional amendment plank that was affirmed yesterday by their party.
"Wisconsin's women deserve an honest account from Ryan, Romney and Thompson not whether they support Akin's campaign. but whether they support his extreme ideas about women's health.
